FAT Tactic - Farming above 1300

Global!

It is common knowledge among those who study the game that the best range for farming seems to be within the 1100 - 1300 trophy range. And one of the best tactics to exploit that is using the BAM Tactic. You can take in huge amounts of resources fast so you can upgrade your base fast.

So while that is a fantastic method, it does limit you to remaining at that level. The only issue with that, is it limits the recruiting you can do for your clan. Like it or not, you are judged first on the league badge you wear. Even if you are a level 77, Town Hall 8 that means business, you are generally not taken seriously as a recruiter.

I had thought previously it was IMPOSSIBLE to farm above 1300. Thankfully I have proven myself wrong, I call this the FAT Tactic ((F)arming (A)bove (T)hirteen). This is what you have to know:

  1. Strength. You need a strong Town Hall level 8 (TH8) base. A strong TH7 may do, but I was never able to do it.
  2. Troop mix. BAM will no longer work, or becomes very ineffective. A troop mix that does work is barbarians, archers, goblins, giants, and wall breakers (28,56,20,16,8 respectively).
  3. Target selection. By now you ought to know not to pick a fight with someone much tougher than you. This doesn't mean you cannot, just that they should be a "rushed" town hall and weak.
Discussion

Strength. This information is not going to do a TH6 much good, you simply will not be able to hold on to the resources at this level. Your gold and elixir will be gobbled up greedily by much stronger players.

Even as a TH8, I was having difficulty keeping resources above 1300 until I upgraded my base to a minimal level, and found a good defensive layout. This is what my base currently looks like:

If you cannot see, the mortars are at their maximum level, and the wizard towers will be too within the month. I think the splash defense is key. Also, make those spring traps work for you. If giants are not flying like popcorn, they are not doing their job.

Troop mix. It took me a few attacks to get used to the troop mix and to learn to deploy it effectively. Having a level 5 Barbarian King (BK) is very handy. The BK rages all the barbarians around him, and even if it is only for 10 seconds, it is very handy! As far as spells, I keep 2 healing and 1 rage spell cooking. Rarely do I ever have all three though. Having a good clan to support your clan castle helps too (thanks Syes Matters!).

Target selection. This, like using the troop mix just takes practice. Pick TH7s with 100k each resources to practice with. I regularly pull in 200k+ gold and elixir now during each raid. And when I find a target with huge amounts of dark elixir, I am able to penetrate to the center and eat their lunch (get their dark elixir).

The only issue with the tactic is that it now takes 20 minutes to build an army, and it costs more elixir (but less dark elixir). So where I could fight 4 times in an hour, now I can only battle 3 times. But that is a minor tradeoff to farm above 1300.

This is a video of FAT in action:

That is all for now.

Early Strategy and Tactics for the New Player

Global!

So this screen is fresh in your mind:

And your base may look something like this now:

So the BIG question in your mind just might be, what do I do now? Nobody wants to waste time learning things the hard way, but sometimes we do anyway. This post intends to ease your path into all things that Clash!

So first, you may have noticed the words strategy and tactics in the title of the post. If you are unfamiliar with the terms or wish to learn how I will use them, see this post:
Strategies versus Tactics <-- Check it out!

Early Strategies
  •  Learn as much as you can early and often. This blog will be a good source, there are other sources too! Check the front page of the blog for good links. If you find another site you like, send me an email and I'll add it.
  • Grow your base as fast and as strong as you can. Many think that growing a base is upgrading the town hall, and that they should be upgrading their town hall as fast as possible. This is not the strategy I recommend. I will discuss "pushing town hall upgrades" later. Upgrade everything to the maximum level first in your base, then your town hall. This includes troops, and spells.
Although being in a clan is an important part of Clash of Clans, do not rush to get in a clan. Learn the ropes first. I'll discuss this later also.

Early Tactics

There aren't any tactics to share for the first strategy, except to take screenshots of bases you like. You can go back and test them out later. In support of the second strategy, these are tactics you will want to experiment with and get good at:

  • Use barbarians only until around Town Hall level 3. Why? They are cheap and fast to make. The more battles you can get in, the more resources you can get, the faster you can upgrade, etc... you get the picture.
  • Target bases with easy to get resources. This means a base similar to your level, with gold and elixir not heavily protected by walls. Don't be afraid to hit the [Next] button. See the video below for an example:

  • Keep your builders busy. Something should always be upgrading, which means you have to keep getting more resources! Save the long upgrades for overnight. That way you wil have more fun during the day.
  • Fatten your resources before the town hall finishes upgrading. I usually keep fat right before and during the upgrade. This ensures you will have the resources to immediately build and upgrade the new items you will have access to after the town hall upgrade finishes.
So this was a bite size chunk of strategy and tactics. Notice that the strategies support each other, the tactics support each other, and the tactics support the strategies. This is an early path to success!

Strategies versus Tactics

Global!

Before I get too much farther, I want to discuss both strategy and tactics so that we can have a common understanding of what they are as I continue to discuss them with you on this blog relative to Clash of Clans!

I am not going to offer you a dictionary definition of both terms, but will define them as I mean them in the context of this blog. My reasoning is that they mean different things to me.

Strategy - broad goal or objective.

Tactic - a specific action taken to support a goal or objective.

Now this is why I think the distinction is important: often we discuss strategies and tactics but only mean tactics. And here's what is missing: The main goal or objective!

Strategy is extremely important, it provides direction and meaning. It provides you a map to the eventual place you want to be!

Tactics are also important, they provide the methods and paths to get to the place you want to be.

Without the first you do not go in any real direction, bouncing around as fate allows, without the second you cannot reliably get where you want to go.

So first, as in anything else in life, have goals! And second, learn the tactics necessary to get you there!

But I leave you with one last thought, be sure that your goals support each other, your tactics support each other, and that finally your goals and tactics are aligned. If you do these things, you increase your success!
